So we all know what smoke alarms are and that they are supposed to be inspected fairly often, but how many times have you tested your detector this year? It’s quite common to skip the monthly testing because we simply forget or some may even consider it to be a waste of time however, Mister Sparky wants you to know that examining your detector once a month is not only safe for you and your family, but it’s also easy to do!

Buttons
One of the more traditional ways to test your smoke alarm is by simply holding down the test button until it produces a loud noise (this is why your loved ones need to be forewarned). Although this gives you a good idea as to whether or not your detector will sound in the event of smoke, many feel it doesn’t indicate whether it actually detects smoke.
Testing Spray
A way to check if it will recognize smoke is by using smoke detector testing aerosol spray is one of the more common tactics practiced today because of its ease and efficiency. First, purchase a can of testing spray at your local hardware store. Next, spray a small amount (as directed on the product) into the vents of the alarm. If it sounds, your detector is working properly! If not, change the batteries or replace it.
Matches
This is the closest you’ll get to testing your alarm with actual smoke. To test your alarm this way, take a couple matches and light them up. Once this is done, blow out the matches and hold them right up to the alarm and allow the smoke to flow into the vents. This is a fairly effective way to see if the device senses smoke or not.
Just a side note, when checking alarms at home, be sure to alert the family of loud noises and anyone who will be close to the detector should wear ear plugs or cotton balls if their ears are sensitive.
