A residential standby emergency generator restores normal electricity supply to your home in the event that the normal electricity supply is interrupted from the utility company.  This electricity is generated on site by the generator engine designed solely for this purpose.  The engine is generally fueled by a natural gas or propane feed.

An automatic electrical transfer switch is the bridge between the standby emergency generator and the main home electrical system.  The transfer switch continuously monitors the availability of electricity into the home through the main electrical panel.  If there is an interruption in the supply, the automatic transfer switch will send an electronic signal to the generator engine to start and generally within fifteen seconds begin routing the newly generated electricity from the backup emergency generator through the transfer switch and finally into the main electrical panel with then feeds the home.  When the main electricity supply is restored, the automatic transfer switch detects this and sends another electronic signal to the backup emergency generator to turn off.  Key Point:  The automatic transfer switch allows electricity to be fed from only one source at a time.

A common question is what size generator will I need for my home?  A typical 3000-4000 sq/ft. home today will have a 150-200 amp main electrical panel.  Residential generators are sized by kilowatts or (KW).  (1) Kw = roughly 4 amps of electrical service if running on natural gas.  Example:  16Kw generator x 4 amps = 64 amps of service available to the home.  Compare this result (64 amps) to the normal 150-200 amps and it starts to make since.  See chart below for more examples on generator sizing.
